Windshield Repair in Katy

Tell us the year, make, model and body style, and which piece of glass is damaged. For a windshield, we also need to know what's attached to it: a camera behind the mirror, rain sensor, heated wiper park, heads-up display, antenna or acoustic interlayer. Those change the part. We take the old glass out with us when we leave. A windshield is laminated glass bonded to the body, so removal means lifting the cowl or trim panels and cutting the old urethane out. Some moldings and clips are designed for one use and won't seat correctly a second time. If yours are in that condition or already damaged, we tell you before we begin rather than after.

That depends on the adhesive, and your installer gives you the exact safe drive-away figure for the product used on your vehicle. A windshield is bonded in with urethane and is a structural part of the car, so it has to reach strength before the vehicle is driven. Temperature and humidity affect that. We'll also tell you about any retention tape, and to avoid slamming doors while it sets.

Rain is not a problem once the glass is set and the urethane has skinned over; a correctly installed windshield seals against water. High-pressure car washes and pressure washers are different, because the jets can push against fresh adhesive and the moldings. Hand washing is gentler. Your installer will tell you when the adhesive on your job is at full strength and the automatic wash is fine.

Yes, a chip is worth looking at while it is still a chip. The break is a stress point in the glass, and heat from a defroster, a cold night, a rough road or a slammed door can run it out into a crack without warning. Dirt and water working into the break also affect how clear the finished result looks. Bring it to us or have us come to you.

Size, location and depth decide it. Damage larger than a dollar bill, cracks that reach the edge of the glass, breaks that go through the inner layer as well as the outer one, and multiple long legs running from one impact point are generally past repair. Damage sitting in the driver's line of sight or over a camera or sensor area is also usually replaced instead.

Yes. Door glass, vent glass, quarter glass and most back glass are tempered, so they break into small blunt fragments instead of sharp shards. That is the glass doing its job. The downside is that the pieces travel: into the door shell, under seats, into carpet, seat tracks and vents. We clean out what we can reach during the replacement, and pieces can still work loose from inside a door later.

Tell us and we'll look at it. Wind noise at speed, water where it shouldn't be, a rattle, a molding that isn't sitting flat, or a driver-assist warning on the dash are all things we want to see rather than have you live with. You can bring the vehicle to our Katy shop or we can come back out to you with the mobile unit.

Glass damage is handled under the comprehensive part of your policy, not collision or liability, and comprehensive claims are generally treated differently from an at-fault accident. Every carrier and policy is different, though, so your carrier is the one who can confirm it for yours. Either way, nothing is filed until you tell us to.

It comes down to two numbers: your comprehensive deductible and the price of the glass. If your deductible is $250 and the replacement is $550, claiming saves you $300. If your deductible is $500 and the glass is $420, paying directly is cheaper — and there is no claim on your record. We will price it both ways before you decide.

Often, yes. Damage smaller than a dollar bill, outside the driver’s line of sight and away from the edge of the glass can usually be repaired rather than replaced. If there is a camera mounted behind your windshield — lane keeping, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise — the manufacturer generally requires recalibration after the glass is replaced, so the system aims where it is supposed to.
